Lordy, how I loved this book and knew that I would from the first chapter. What we have is a hoyden, Josephine Middleton, whose Grandpa and Papa have managed to get her a marriage proposal from the young Duke of Mitford whom she's never met. Jo is informed that the duke will be arriving within the next few days to request her hand in marriage. The family is all a flutter including Jo. Since Jo doesn't quite have the courage to confront Grandpa and Papa, she takes it upon herself to hitch a ride to her aunt's house - a few hours away - but makes the mistake of thinking the scoundrel who has offered to give her a ride is a gentleman. He wants her dowry, he wants her virtue and he sets her up for ruin.But... the Duke of Mitford is traveling incognito and hears the goings on in the room next to his. He saves the day, but upon realizing Jo is running away from him, Mitford decides to use his name, Paul Villiers, until he can figure out how to return her safely back to the arms of her family. First mistake... From then on, Jo leads Paul a merry little dance into one imbroglio after another until he's in so deep, he who has a reputation of being a very dull dog, finds himself telling one untruth after another as they wend their way to a resolution which will serve everyone's needs.
I'm a sucker for these types of books and don't know whether I would ever get tired of reading about the fun mixture of two people who appear to be so mismatched, but instead are exactly what the other one needs. I loved the sweet, firm manner in which Paul dealt with Jo along their journey.
One last comment. A proofreader was/is desperately needed. I believe this was the worst proofreading job of a published book by a well-known author I've ever read.

Unlikely Duchess Regency Romance Mary Balogh 9780451167392 Books Reviews
I have enjoyed many of Mary Balogh' s romances, so I was interested to read one of her earlier works that was supposed to be more light hearted and less angsty than her current books seem. Unfortunately, this was not a particularly fun/funny read for me. At first, I thought Paul was a refreshing hero...not tall, dark, and handsome, but short-ish, average, and kind; but, he was too kind and let Josephine run all over him. And, Josephine! At one point Paul thinks her "an insane and brainless little creature," and this is a perfect description.
Cleverly written in the style of Georgette Heyer. She was a hoyden and he was a stodgy, staid young duke. both the hero and heroine are young and fairly innocent. Almost a farce. Delightful, I loved it. This is one of Ms. Balogh's earlier works. I do prefer her later books. I gave the book 4 stars because of errors.
I did have a problem with all the errors in the e-edition, so many I lost track. Loc. 614 "Jo would not dope." elope? Loc 633 "I could travel much FESTER without you." Loc 173 "But of COARSE." Loc 2173 "The fact that they belonged to the bride his "father" had chosen for him,..." s/b grandfather. Loc 2446 "...already I feel that I could BILE my tongue out."
The heroine of this book is at one point described by the hero as a brainless twit. He is absolutely right. This ninny is so aggravating that I don't see how the hero could eventually fall in love with her. Apparently all this is required to fall in love is proximity. After all, what single attractive characteristic did she show him the entire time they were together that could make him care about her? Why would anyone fall in love with this nitwit? Why was he so happy to marry her? I felt sorry for him being tied to this idiot for the rest of his life. It was so unbelievable that I pretty much skimmed the last third of the book.
I am a big fan of Mary Balogh's more recent work. However, these reissues of older works have really been disappointing. I'm so glad Balogh matured as a writer and her heroines have matured as well. But this is the third time I have been sadly sorry I have paid real money for these older works. The heroines in these stories are so irritating that I cannot tolerate them. And I will no longer believe the 5 star reviews of these books! After these three books (this one, The Masked Deception, and Beyond the Sunrise--you can read my scathing review of that one) I have decided I will not buy any more of these books. On top of everything else, the typos in the edition were ridiculous. Apparently a human editor never looked at the text. The publisher is clearly just out to grab a quick buck.
Not her best. The heroine is somewhat maddening, scatter brained and silly in her thought process. It's supposed to turn into an adventure for the normally staid duke, but it's such a headache. Especially when the heroine almost lets the villain fool her a second time when she naively believes he's stowed her stolen jewels at a different locale and thinks it's a great idea to get into a carriage with him....ugh. I wanted to smack her. I like smart heroines. This one was a yawn.
What a disappointment! In the past I have enjoyed Mary Balogh's stories. However, this attempt at a Regency screwball comedy falls flat. The heroine is an idiot and the hero isn't much better. No matter how sheltered and naïve the heroine may be, her utter unconcern for her reputation is completely unbelievable, even in a screwball comedy. The hero professes concern for her reputation but continues to make one decision after another that compounds her ruin. To add insult to injury, the kindle edition is riddled with typographical errors and absurdly incorrect word choices. It looks like the editor was not a human, but rather the auto-correct feature of a word processor.
