I wasn't actually sure how many stars to give this; depending on your taste in poetry it'll range from one to five. I bought it sight unseen after reading her often hilarious and fascinating collaborative Selected Tweets book with Tao Lin, but was disappointed in what seemed to be frequently very dry and sometimes samey poems. The reason why I'm having trouble assigning stars to it, though, is that I realize that a lot of my reaction to the book might have to do with being a generation older than Gonzalez; all books have some audience written in mind, and it's neither here nor there but Gonzalez seems to be writing mostly for her contemporaries in a deadpan style I've seen in other books by younger writers, and I think your age might affect what you want to "get" out of poetry, so while it would be incorrect to suggest the work isn't good, it's just really not for me. If that doesn't help, try looking up work online by Tao Lin, Megan Boyle, and writers that come up in searches for them to get an idea of the general style.

I actually really loved this book, some one the poems are weird and sometimes are very "blunt", such as one of the poems where she discussed ejaculation, but I was able to connect and relate and I will continue rereading it over and over again.
Good read.
Amazing.
I became interested in this book after seeing Florence Welch share an image of it on her instagram page. Being a fan of Florence and the Machine I was instantly curious about this book. After waiting months for ghe book to be reissued, I can state that it was well worth the wait. Mira Gonzalez has a way of pulling in her readers and captivating them with her words.
Mira is a testament to the fact that poetry does not have to be pretty. Her work is raw and honest allowing the reader to connect with her on a level all too real. She uses her words sparingly, but is able to create an accurate depiction of the wasteland of youth this generation is all too familiar with. Readers are able to explore her psyche and her honesty leaves them slightly uncomfortable, but in awe.

Mira explores the themes of drugs, sexuality, and depression in a way that the general public doesn't typically get to see. She gave me a fresh take on reality, but left me in a haze. Her writing is vague and descriptive at the same time.

Her poems are sincere and will most definitely stick with you.
It would be so easy to make this style of writing trite and uninteresting, but Gonzalez has the talent to nail it. She masterfully can take a single sentence and make the reality of it cut like a knife. The questions she raises and leaves for us to answer will leave you reeling. This is a document of pain, depression, and despondence for the modern age, told with an unflinching realism. Gonzalez is not trying to impress anyone; these are words of emotional honesty, curated in a manner which many poets twice her age will struggle to achieve in their work
I liked this book quite a lot; it’s spare and direct, but with associative leaps that explode, but quietly and in sun-faded colors. The writing bears many of the hallmarks of the ‘style’ usually associated with Tao Lin, but it does so in a way that felt earnest (one nickname among many for this style seems to be the ‘new sincerity’ movement, which seems bizarre). Emotionally charged but at a remove–the real resonance for me comes from all its strangeness and surprises, the odd and lonely scenes in each poem. The book engages with the paradox of loneliness and closeness better than most that try, as the speaker is constantly hyper self-aware not only in index-like cataloging of emotions and thoughts but even more so with physicality, with frequent lines about desiring to not just engage a physical body with her own but to occupy the exact same space, down to the empty space between each other’s atoms.

It’s an incredibly smart book, making deft and highly insightful gestures that are subtle and easily misunderstood to be simplistic or banal. There’s also a lot of nostalgia and retracing, time becoming an odd thing as past and present seem (like the speaker’s body) to occupy / want to occupy impossible spaces. With all this a constant self-reminder that emotional singularity is a lie, that everything felt has been felt before and almost nothing we ever experience is unique outside of our subjective existence. This tightens the emphasis on self, brings added scrutiny to interactions with others, how they perceive us, and how we act with that magnified gaze constantly feeding back.
