What a different kind of memoir. The title doesn't really do it justice. When first starting the book, you think the author is foul mouthed, weird and rebellious. Keep reading. She is also warm, funny, sounds like a wonderful parent, a loving sibling to her twin , interesting, talented and quite soulful. I like where she ended the book and each chapter towards the end had remarkable stories of compassion and serendipity. She sounds like she has achieved some true wisdom in her passage through life. Bless her!

Book was recommended to me and I usually hate these sorts of Summer in Provence sorts of books BUT this one is different. It is written by a woman who has such a wry look on her life and loves and jobs that I really could not put it down. If you read one book for Christmas (or better yet as a present for everyone on your list) make it this one.
We can all relate in some way to the hilarious and endearing stories in this book. It's like sitting around with some wine and your best friend, laughing, maybe crying, while sharing those crazy times of your lives that made you who you are today. I. Leigh Private, thank you for being so open and honest in revealing some of your most personal stories. It is refreshing and validating. By the way, girls, this book makes a perfect gift!
Private is a marvelous storyteller who is able to strike that tricky balance between the serious and humorous --creating many poignant moments. She has woven her themes of life, love, friends, and family into stories filled with humor, humility, and the joys of life. I loved this book and look forward to her next.
A must read for the holidays. During this time of family, friends and giving - Ms. Private will take you on a journey of some of her life's most poignant and tender moments. She has a truly gifted and relatable voice. Each vignette leaves you hungry for more. A powerful reminder that life should be measured in the aggregate - a collecting of joyous and challenging times that we should always reflect upon with a sense of humor. Hope there are more twists and turns to her trail on the horizon!!!
Loved this book and wished that it didn't have to end. Will be on the lookout for more from this fab writer! Enjoy ... lots of real life here ... served up with a rich humor!
I love books that take me on a ride and for this one you MUST buckle up! I traveled the world in a matter of hours. I laughed and cried and sometimes that happened in the same story. "Okey Dokey Trail" reminded me that the human experience has no prescribed rules of convention and to think that I can impose a formula on life with it's coincidences and surprises is pretty foolish. I like this fearless wanderer, I Leigh Private, wondering what will come next.
On the Okey Dokey Trail
This collection of autobiographic short stores written by a smart, funny, deeply thoughtful swashbuckler who happens to be a really neat women is worth a double reading.
I Leigh Private has mastered the art of swashbuckling through life with elan, humor and empathy—a uniquely feminine form of swashbuckling that if learned by more women would eliminate the need for “empowerment” and “leaning in” once and for all. There is no glass ceiling, no glass basement, no excuse for not asking the question, making the plan, writing the letter, pulling up unannounced with a list of questions. Tiger Mom is nothing but a nag compared to this woman.
I Leigh’s approach to life has been to just do it, go for it. Failure happens and so does success. The act of trying, of just going for it, is itself an affirmation and even when the result is a plop, there is something good in the fact of trying. The stories tell a life of great joy, great love, great success, falls on the face, and great grief. This is, I Leigh is saying, what life is.
The woman who emerges from this collection of stories is rarely daunted (usually a little late in
the game), and defined by the aggregate of her experiences and not one moment or week or year or years of sadness or joy. After a half-centery her swashbuckler creds are fully intact and ready for the next half century.
Read every story and then go back and read them again. There is a great deal to learn about swashbuckling and we should all take the course.
